Removing the crank pulley without using the starter
Basically I tried that method and the chain jumped off the top pulley, so I can't turn it over without causing chaos and carnage.
Has anyone got any bright ideas? Sprint engine.

Ooooh nasty. What's the clearance like at the front? Any chance of getting an air impact gun on it?
I'd be starting to think timing gear off to prevent anything happening to the valves etc. but that's a serious faff.

Alas my father took a look at the problem and said use the starter it will be fine. The pulley is off and the front engine over is now shattered at the bottom. Guess what I am looking for now? Oh well.

Re: Removing the crank pulley without using the starter
if the head is off, it my be easy to remove the starter motor, use a thick blade screw driver to fit in the starter ring gear and the bell housing, it has to be in the right place for the direction of rotation, a two person job as well.

If 2 people are there, stick in 4th gear and have someone press the brake hard while you swing on the bar

Take off the sump and wedge the crank with a block of wood.

It is off and rebuilt, blew up the front cover alas and found the half moon seal had fallen into the pulleys. So an expensive lesson, but it could have been worse.

Which method worked then?
