Engine oil, 20/50 best.
Don't be tempted by thin oil, it doesn't give enough enrichment during acceleration.

Re: carburettor oil
The carbs shouldn't need constant topping up as there is nowhere for the oil to go. It is only there as a damping medium. Unscrew the plastic cap on the top and pull the plunger out, then push it back in. If there is resistance to pushing it in, you have enough oil.

Re: carburettor oil
ATF can be used and one of my CT friends (you'll probably know him Clive. he goes by the name of "Mik") uses a mixture of 20W50 and 3-in-1 in his 1500 racing Spitifre. I believe that SU can supply dashpot oil. None of these recommendations (including the engine oil) are wrong so use whichever works best for you.

Re: carburettor oil
Just use the SU Dashpot oil, it is not very expensive and should last for ages. I think you can pick up a bottle for about £6.

Hang on a moment, they rarely need topping up? Every car with SU's I've ever had needed topping up regularly and forget using thin machine oil as that used to vanish in no time, what am I doing wrong?!
Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)
Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3
