respray

ive been to get some quotes regarding getting my 1500fwd resprayed. i am after a good job doing but am unsure on
1/ whether to allow the garage to take the front and rear glass out or mask the rubber up? i'm a bit worried the rubbers might break up once removed - can you get replacements?
2/ whether to take of the chrome trim off around the rear window (according to my parts catalogue appears to be 2 halves with a joining cover in the middle and 2 cappings at the bottoms by the boot )
3/ whether to take off the boot lid chrome trim and 2 vertical filler end trims that run vertically
4/ whether to take off the drip channel chrome trim
5/ whether to take off the chrome moulding trims ( 3 either side) that sit just under the side windows

i dont mind the garage taking the trims off but am just worried it might become a buggers muddle gettng them all back on. what have other people on here done - i'd appreciate your feedback. thanks

Chrome areas are water traps and therefore rust traps. Seems a bit of a shame to respray the car when you potentially have some corrosion which needs sorting underneath. The respray is going to be defined by the quality of the prep work done.

What kind of prices have you been getting for the resprays?

Trimless rear acreen rubbers are available in EPDM rubber from Chris Witor.
Front screen rubbers are available from many places, they're apparently all made by the same company so shop around and remember to include postage, a new trim, and a new finishing piece.
As Steve says, the trim should be removed to expose any hidden bits of grot. Bresco provide fasteners for most (all ?) of the trim, some plastic clips others metal clips. The 'feet' at the bottom of the rear window trims are like rocking horse poo, so don't lose them!

Another vote for removing the trim as already said its a water and rust trap area as are the door handles etc and just masking them to spray over the top is a waste of money, there will be a lot of prep work involved, I'm also interested in how much the quotes are as just the paint and materials alone will come to about £500 if decent brands are used.

I'm there with removal too, if you want to see pictures of what a paint job looks like when people just mask around things I'll happily send you pictures of my own car and the flaking paint around the periphery of the trim parts.

I'm curious about the cost as well, every one is always so cagey about mentioning what things cost them, it's either a conspiracy or everyone is not letting on to the partners what it really costs and they're worried they will see it!

Well, since you asked... I have recently put my 1850HL back on the road after 26 years languishing in my brother-in-law's garage. It needed a little welding on the front of the sills which I did myself, and the paint was generally faded and very scruffy. I told my local body guy to do a cheap job because the car cost me nothing, and although I spent a fair bit on reconditioning it, it was still not worth a lot. I removed the front and rear screens and all the bright trim, but not the windows in the doors. It came back looking very good, although if you look carefully you will see some paint blemishes, and there is a bit of overspray on the door window rubbers. I'll rub that off one day - perhaps. What did he charge me?

I resprayed my Toledo myself, I took all the trim off, If you leave the trim on you cannot rub the bodywork down close to the trims & you risk scraching the trims, then the new paint always flakes off near the trim, if you take them off you can then get new paint under them. When refitting after the respray the trims below the side windows are held on with plastic clips, which i replaced. The trim round the rear roof & rear wing & boot rear edge are held on with metal clips which you put into the trim then knock on, The metal clips then scrach the paint & this is why you get rust appearing from under the trim, so i filled my trims with grease then knocked them back on. At least the grease will all around the clips hopefully stoping the rust. ?

Thank you Steve, it's Tahiti Blue which is it's original colour. Despite the cheap job, it was sprayed in 2-pack and looks lovely. It certainly attracts a lot of attention. I've had men chasing me round the supermarket car park so they can have a look at it. When I went to the local Halfords, all the guys came out the shop to see it. I'm really enjoying driving it too. It's nippy enough to keep up with modern traffic, has excellent visibility all round, and is comfortable. Where you notice the age is with wind noise at 70 mph. Downsides are the heavy steering for parking (fine once rolling), fiddling with the choke for the first couple of miles, and the awkward selection of reverse on the single rail gearbox. Three times out of four I go into third gear instead of reverse.

thanks guys for the replies. ive been quoted £2000 but its more than just a respray - there are lots of minor dinges all over and particularly on the roof when ive been storing things on it
