Build dates

#1 Post by georgethompson730 »

Hi everyone, anyone out there got a VIN No. near mine so I might be able to guess my build date. Just out of curiosity really as you can't get a Heritage Certificate sent out at the moment.

First reg. 30/09/1980
VIN/Chassis No. TWFLC5AT111073

Thanks in advance.

You can't get a full Heritage Certificate at the moment, but they will e-mail the date of production to you

As far as I can see you still have to pay for the full priced paper certificate, but you won't receive it until the museum re-opens. They will however email you a copy at no "extra" charge. Unless anyone knows different.

Thanks everyone, pretty much what I had worked out about the museum being closed. At 108000 and mine being 111073 still a few being made after 23rd April. Going to have to pay the £6 I think. Anyone know the last VIN.no. for 1850's , I think mine might be quite a late one.

I may be mistaken, but I think the final Sprint is something like 113118 and this was the last Dolomite built. Someone will know and no doubt derive small pleasure from correcting me!

EDIT James467's late Sprint NWLxxxW, reckoned to be one of the last 10 Sprints built, is 112876, so the number I quoted above is fairly close! NWL was built in August of 1980, so you have a bracket, I'd put 111073 at late June/early July.

For the £6 email enquiry will they tell me the paint code of BPM663T ?

It was my first Sprint purchased in 1987. It was a darker green than my current HAE green Sprint.

Thanks, Richard

I was advised by the archive department at Gaydon that my 1500HL chassis/commission number TWFLW5AT/110567 has a build date of 18th June 1980 so not far from your car in production.

They will tell you one item of information from what they hold; it will likely give you the code, but it could be the colour name, or it could just be generic 'green' all dependent on what they hold.

You'll need the chassis number though as the registration was not allocated at the factory.

No pleasure taken from this Steve :D

Well sent my £6 last night and woke to a refund and a message 'Unfortunately the factory record for your car has not survived.' how sad is that!
I'll never know it's birthday unless someone has the car or two right next to mine. Late June early July is a good guess, thanks everyone.

Replied to their email just to make sure I gave the correct VIN and got this very interested reply, well I thought so :)

Dear Mr Thompson,

Yes, that is the VIN you provided. To explain the situation, the Triumph factory records have only survived as microfilmed build cards, which have since been digitised. Unfortunately the VIN sequence jumps from 111071 to 111076, meaning the sheet which contains your car's record was never microfilmed. As to why this was, we can but surmise, the most likely explanation being it was damaged and rendered unreadable. It is fair to say that not much trouble was taken when the microfilms were created. From the other records we can estimate your car was built 4 July 1980, however because we do not have the car's record, we are unable to state this as fact, or be able to produce any document for the car.

How unlucky is that, chances our yours is the only car that survives in that small quantity of numbers anyway.
