Sprint bulkhead heat shield

#1 Post by BobM »

Hi.
Is anyone able to help with the positioning of the 3 rivet holes in the bulkhead. These are for mounting the heat shield (160151), that shields heat from the exhaust downpipe.

Annoyingly I failed to note the position when cutting out the rusty area. I am not eager to temporarily refit the engine just to position the holes. Perhaps the position of one or even two holes maybe enough of a guide.

Perhaps as a clue, are the rivets covered by the edge of the insulation pad.

Any clues would be most helpful.

Not much help but here is a pic of mine.

It sits centrally within the bulkhead sound deadening pad. I measured the location of the top rivet as best I could. Its is 370mm straight down from the top of the bulkhead (about 4mm below the sound deadening pad) and 190 mm in from the inner wing (measure horizontally). Because it is so tight the measurements are approximate. I couldn't really get in to measure the bottom rivet. I did think about doing it from inside the car but the deadening pad is stuck down and I didn't want to peel it off. I could feel one but it is up behind the parcel shelf with no real datum to measure from.

There is a school of thought that says make it removable by putting spire nuts over the holes in the bracket and securing it with short self tappers from inside the car.

Please God you don't have to do it often, but making it detachable doesn't half make a difference to the job time and swear factor if you need to remove the downpipe from the manifold at any time!

Hi Bob.

See attached pictures from my Sprint. I've recently refitted it and riveted back in place.. Steve's comments are a sensible precaution for future though.

Steve is right. Bolt or screw the heat shield on so that if you ever have to drop the downpipe off the manifold all you have to do is remove the heat shield and then there is room to move the downpipe back off the manifold.

I lost my bulkhead heat shield and fabricated something out of a piece polished stainless steel I had lying around, reasoning that it would possibly do a better job with its polished surface than the original.

I am working on another Sprint at the moment and with the engine and sub frame out and the car sitting in my rotating jig I will be drilling heat shield rivets out and replacing them with some suitable nuts and bolts.

It will help then if the future owner ever has to remove the cylinder head while the engine is in the car.

This photo is of the shield fitted to HU 5000, the story of its restoration can be found elsewhere.
