sprint exhaust manifold

Hi can cast iron manifolds be welded ? theres a small corner of my Sprint manifold broken of

In answer to you query about cast iron welding, i was at the restoration show at the nec at the weekend i was talking to a chap who had a stall there and he did cast iron welding but i am sorry i do not know the business name.

I understand if you get cast iron red hot you can weld it...but happy to be corrected...

You certainly can. The two guys that run my local forge have often cut and welded cast-iron guttering for me, to make up special shaped pieces.

The combination of the words cast iron AND manifold makes it almost never a succes. Many claim they can but had in my life a lot cast iron manifolds welded just because these were from rare classics or excotics and not available but all who tried failed. Different specialised companies over the years and all welding during the casting being red hot.

It's the stress from the constant heat and cool down in an exhaust manifold that makes the weld break again.

Better source another manifold to save you some trouble and frustration.

I also had a chat with them at the NEC, as it is a field which interests me.

The company is called CIWS cast iron welding services. No connection to me.

If I remember correctly, they heat the item , then gas weld it using a filler rod which they manufacture themselves with a suitable composition.

They had one or two interesting items on their stand.
