Toledo steering column nacelle rubbing on steering wheel

#1 Post by 2door-toledo »

Hi
I'm finally trying to get the steering column nacelle fitted to my car. I can't really get it fitting satisfactorily. It seems that the steering wheel is slightly too low vertically, and thus rubbing on the nacelle - there is basically no gap between the wheel and nacelle.

Does anyone know what influences the steering wheel position vertically and how this can be adjusted or fixed?

I loosened the clamp on the intermediate shaft in the engine bay and tried to lift the wheel when inside the car, but it did not seem to want to budge.

From the ROM it sounds like the upper column can be withdrawn, I am wondering if the vertical position can be adjusted by loosening the so called "safety clamp"?

Worth noting it's a non-adjustable column, unlike you people with your fancy Dolomites.

Many thanks

Yes, undo the pair of 7/16 headed bolts (number 8 ) a smidge, pull the wheel up and retighten. Easy if you are flexible enough to insert yourself in the footwell. And your glasses don't fall off in the process.

Thanks Clive. That worked. I now have a mm or two gap and it's no longer rubbing. The steering column was unfortunately one of the few things I didn't take apart so I don't have a strong understanding of how it works.

Being one of the younger Toledo owners I have no idea what I am doing due to lack of experience, but thankfully flexibility is no problem. 8)

And that finally is the parcel shelf and steering nacelle fully fitted, hopefully for the last time, and I finally call the restoration complete, a few years after all the other bits were finished.

Now just to give it a good clean before heading to Triumph 100 on Friday.

cheers

I will be there too. I will be in a white Vitesse 6 convertible, red interior (including MX5 seats) B reg. Possibly on the CT stand.

Cool, I'll try and say hello. My green Toledo should be on the timeline thingy.
