Re: Datsun 240z brakes

I've got the same rear end in my Sprint, but my housing is from a 6cyl Cortina. Tubes and axles (25 spline) have been shorted to standard Dolly width. I recently had the gears changed to 4.11. What LSD are you running? The normal cone type is totally crap! KAAZ make a centre for these, but only for 28 spline axles, so everything gets heavier again... At least it would be the Sprint rear end to end all ends! ;) I'm currently running a mini-spool! Crude but effective...

Mine is 28 spline axles ,Skyline, where the Pintara are 25, currently using a cone LSD. There was much discussion with numerous so call "experts" about what LSD to use. I was reluctant to use the cone type, but the experts ranged from agreeing with me, to totally opposite saying the cone type was the only one to use.

I decided to stay with cone type for time being due to cost of the Kaaz units. I am not a fan of locked diffs (spool), so I am waiting to see how long the cone type lasts. A friend of mine runs a 25 spline cone LSD in his Turbo Sprint race car, and has had no problems at all, time will tell.

I have a pair of 25 spine axles, the short axle should suit your long axle (you know what I mean), if they are of any use to you.

100mm wider at the back, must almost be as wide as the front! :D

Mark, can you send me an email about the cost of those 2nd hand Z drums?
My rear shoes are so ingrained with diff oil that i basically have no rear brakes. :?

Cheers,

Even after having my cone LSD rebuilt (which is hard as parts are now scarce) and shimmed up it still spun up like an open diff. I blame this partly on the Dolly's eagerness to lift the inside rear wheel. Perhaps you have solved this already somehow... To make matters worse, the cone units don't tighten up with torque. I accept your dislike of lock diffs, but I've proven mine to be considerably faster than an open diff, so it is the winner until I get a KAAZ... FYI:- After a season with the mini-spool the 25 spline axles have no visible wear or twisting around the splines. If you are brave you could have your 28's thinned down to save weight...

I'll pass on the spare 25's. Mine are shortened Commodore ones with VL wheel bearings. Dunno if yours would work... The long term plan is to have some custom light weight axles made with 28 spline ends so I can get a KAAZ in there and forget about it. Although it may be better to just take a leaf from your book and use an unshortened Skyline rear end. Does that come with rear discs??? Prolly never get around to it as I'm board of road cars and ultimately want to get an open wheeler...
