welding Props

#1 Post by 2F45T4U »

Will a 130amp MIG welder with 0.8 wire in it weld up a prop shaft and keep it together even with a considerate amount of power going through it?

No. To make the weld strong enough you'd need to use a lot of weld, which would unbalance the prop. not good. if it breaks you'll have a scaffolding pipe slamming against the floor of your car a few thousand times a minute and it won't take it that long to smash through.

Whather that's before or after it has dug itself into the road and flipped you over is another matter. :D

I'll go along with being rebalanced after but they can be migged.

Company that done my old RWD prop's used a lathe set on a very slow speed to turn the prop whilst mig welded up.

If it's expensive to get made up I'll have a go, then attatch a device to catch the prop if it does unexpectiedly break, similar to a tennis racket with no strings :D

I wouldn't even attempt welding a prop myself and I've been welding since before you been born.

......commonly known as a driveshaft hoop and found on most modified American cars.

Still gives you a bloody terrifying experience when one goes beneath ya - it's when it gets into the cabin that it becomes an issue

And yea, not something I'd try myself. One of the guys on our RR forum did one and got the joints incorrect (had 'em in phase), prop smashed itself to bits after a few hundred miles. He did some very nice welding, all the same.

Just trying to scare him George :D. I'd think the power-weight ratio would be a lot higher in a dolly, so it might be a bit more possible.

Was at a rolling road a few years ago in Daventry ( Daventry rolling road as it happens) on power the car snapped its prop came through the car and smashed the guys arm that was doing the run
Was not a pritty sight
Get it done professionally
Work out how fast the prop turns at 7000 rpm engine speed in top gear
you will not comprehend it ....
