Thanks for the replies! Yes, new nylocs will be used.
Just went out to the garage to have a quick look at the problem, and discovered that both rear cups have gone!
The subframe has dropped at the back, it's a good job that my wife didn't carry on driving.
I am now wondering if one had already gone, causing the strange engine vibrations we've been getting, and eventually the strain proved too much for the other one.
A pair of new cups, lower rubbers (one has disappeared), bolts and nuts have been ordered and will be fitted as soon as they arrive.

Mmmmmm, it shouldn't really look like this!
Especially not when it's BOTH sides.

Re: Project "Nugget" - 1980 Brooklands Green 1500HL Auto
That is undoubtedly what happened.
I have had this happen to me twice....once just like you when the remaining one dropped. I hadn't realised the other side had gone either. This was in the Sprint and luckily only a mile from the house...after the normal 40 mile commute home on the motorway at the usual continental....so I got away with it but the last mile was interesting.
Also happened to the yellow peril. I retrieved the bits from the road and refitted some spare ones within 5 minutes of getting back home. Once bitten...
You can get and I have on some of my fleet a non cupped poly rear sub frame mounting with a flat base, and this uses a big flat washer instead of the cup.
This cant rust away invisibly cos its stainless too.....but needs a slightly longer bolt which it came with, and a mounting spiggot too.
Not sure if you can still get this kit but worth finding.

Yikes, that's nasty
Glad it happened not to far from home.. a simple fix at least.. and a good opportunity to slip in some poly mounts

Holding up very well thanks Howard. Starts, runs and drives great.Howard81 wrote:How has she been holding up to everyday use?
The engine vibrations coming through into the cabin have been annoying, but perhaps that was down to one subframe mounting already being broken, should find out later this week!
One problem is an oil leak from the rear of the engine. Looks like it is the rear crankshaft oil seal, so it may be gearbox out time.

Apart from that, going very well!

Re: Project "Nugget" - 1980 Brooklands Green 1500HL Auto
They all were, as you'd expect. Are you sure its engine oil and not transmission fluid?Do you know if any seals were changed when you had the engine rebuilt?
Vindicator Sprint, Honda Fireblade RRX 919cc, re-powered by AB Performance. Quick.
Re: Project "Nugget" - 1980 Brooklands Green 1500HL Auto
Yes, definitely engine oil.Jod Clark wrote:They all were, as you'd expect. Are you sure its engine oil and not transmission fluid?

Changed the subframe washers last night, there wasn't much left of the old ones!

Re: Project "Nugget" - 1980 Brooklands Green 1500HL Auto
*Clears throat*. SOMEONE, let us refer to him as "X" Didn't know that these cups were obtainable new, so, on discovering that those on his own car were almost at the point of breaking through, carefully repaired them with dished repair washers. If only I... sorry; someone
had known that he could have saved himself hours of measuring, grinding, welding, more grinding, turning, more grinding, etc.
Still, looking on the bright side; at least doing this job gives you the chance to have a good poke to make certain that the surrounding metalwork is all good.

Re: Project "Nugget" - 1980 Brooklands Green 1500HL Auto
As some of you may have seen, Nugget is now up for sale.
My wife has not taken to classic motoring as much as she'd hoped, and we are now looking for a more modern car for her. It would be a shame to see Nugget deteriorate through lack of use, so we have decided to sell.
Anyone who has read this thread over the past few months will know the work that has gone into making Nugget a reliable, solid and tidy every day car. I've put some information in the For Sale section of the forum, if you are interested please PM me, it would be nice to see her stay in the TDC.
Thanks for all the help and advice over the last few months.

The same thing happened to my 1500se at easter but the washes looked in good condition apart from under the nuts rotting, and when mine went it also pulled on the steering column pulling the bulkhead bush out.
And it went as i was pulling out of a parking space and not at 50 mph as i had been doing within the previous hour, which was vey fortunate.
