You need a new bush. My thoughts on which way round it goes are well known....
Not to me they aren't.
There's a civilised correct way to fit this part and a way how the bush people would push it in.

the upper UJ shaft assy ends up snug against the face of the steering bush
There should be a washer in between the UJ and the bush.

Your esteemed view is ..?

I have this nagging feeling that the flatter edge would be better facing into the engine bay in order to improve the UJ shaft clearance, that's all

No washer is needed / required - see attached thread courtsey of James467 viewtopic.php?f=19&t=27969&start=225#p279132 and if everything is fitted correctly there should be a gap between the bush and the top of the sterring knuckle as per the pictures in the thread.

Sorry you havent been around long enough. Jeroen and I dont often disagree because I am always right and he is seldom wrong.

However he thinks the flat bit is on the engine bay side and I think its as the parts book shows and the flat bit is inside the car.

We agreed to differ and I suspect the lhd cars he is more familiar with may well have been done differently for the most part.

So that fills you in....we try not to talk about it too much these days....:-). Bit like ballast bypass and electronic ignition....

We tend to fall asleep while typingzzzzzzz

It's the other way around. Jonners is confused. My statements about this bush the last 12 years is that it is fitted like the partsbook. Or he agrees finally saying it in a funny way or is already sleeping.

Interesting. Have to say I'm tempted to swap mine around. It unquestionably rubs against the upper UJ shaft due to the thickness protruding engine side when using the Tilson orientation, as it might henceforth be known....
