OS steering rack mount (slant 4 engined models)

#1 Post by yorkshire_spam »

Any top tips for getting the steering rack mount out of the RHS on an 1850?
Workshop manual just says withdraw bracket and u bolt. I can't see any way to get it clear of the oil pump?

Only way I know is to undo the engine mounts and jack it up the 5cm or so needed to clear.
Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)

Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

It's been a while since I replaced a rack on a slant but I seem to remember jacking up the engine slightly with a block of wood on the sump to get clearence :D

Oki doki guys, thanks.

Hollow laughter at #4 in the workshop manual.

I notice it doesn't mention "remove engine first"

When I did my 1850, the bracket came away in 2 parts. The long U-bolt ( upwards and then sideways ) and then the bracket bit. I thought it was something fitted to all early cars ??? My late Sprint had the 2 parts welded together though.

The ones on Binny are definitely a single part bracket and U bolt welded together. I tried separating them... very definitely 1 part.

Well there, now you see Haynes and his much maligned manual says
"Support the right-hand side of the engine on a jack and remove the engine mounting. Raise the engine a little with the jack to enable the procedure in paragraph 5 to be carried out."
Pays to read both! :)
