Re: Newbie, I know, the car deserved better.

I wouldn't use a colortune, I have had nothing but trouble with them.

On a standard engine I have always used a gunsons gastester in the past and that has always got good results.

You can borrow mine if you like

I found a Colortune was the only device to balance the mixture between twin SUs ...

Re: Mappable Ignitions Systems

NODIZ looks nice but shame it won't do fuel injection. If i was paying out to have this, I'd want the option of FI in the future so something like Megasquirt (which does do injection) would be my choice. Plenty of international experience and maps to share and rolling road users will be more ...

I agree - after having one snap while touring in europe,it's a cost effective investment! The steering is better with them too and it's nice to " fit and forget ".

Re: 1974 Spitfire MKIV.

To correct an earlier poster the front trunions should be filled with gear oil, not engine oil.

My dad fitted a pair of new lotus trunnions to his Spitty from Canley Classics:

Re: Sprint engine and gearbox - silly idea?

Thats a good price for an engine and gearbox complete. I would go for it as once you have OD, you'll wonder how you ever managed without. Just don't be disapointed if you find out it needs rebulding and have to spend aother weekend dragging the whole lot back out again!

I think the OD and non OD ...

Re: power steering? ...

Been discussed in the past, from memory Maestro/Montego racks were suggested but don't know if any ever made it off the drawing board.

I fitted a Montego PAS rack to a 1500 in the 1990's and used the pump from a Montego and double crank pulley from a US spec Spitfire. It worked:

Re: Head breather on the Sprint

It breathes out and the mesh is supposed to catch oil mist so they dribble back in. Wash out in petrol and it should be good to go again. If left bunged up,the crankcase can pressurise up and then oil leaks start appearing.

Re: 4 speed automatic....

That is a very good point :D If the dolomite sprint gearbox is the same as a 2000 gearbox, then if I use the manual sprint adaptor then the big saloon BM35 bell housing might fit. I think I have a BW35 for a saloon on its way to me, so we'll soon see!
Thank you.

You'll need something regardless ...

4. create an adaptor to make the BMW bellhousing mate to the 1850 engine

Don't give up. Anything is possible if you have the patience and access to the right tools and people, so I recommend you take a look at the work undertaken by a chap near me:

Re: Single rail overdrive

I forgot to mention you'll also need the o/d gearbox cross member and mount. There should be loads of those about as they are common for all Dolomites with o/d. the holes for it are already in the chassis rails.

Re: Single rail overdrive

Well, in general the overdrive is well over engineered for an 1850 so will probably only need the filter cleaning and putting onto a recon box.

I got mine from John Kipping in the 1990s which is still going strong today (shame the same can't be said about John!). I've heard Mike Papworth in ...
