If it is, I know a bit of the history as I saw this in Rotorua about a year ago when it was previously sold. I'm in Auckland, have a few Dolomites and a TR7. Also know a few contacts locally who may know a bit about the 1500 motors. Give me a ring sometime at work 520 9502. Geoff
Rebuilt gearbox troubles
Have finally got my race car back together after new paddle clutch, rebuilt gearbox and a Capri rear axle transplant.

I am presently running the new clutch in - I'm told I need to do 500-1000km - but am having problems with the gearbox. Have never driven a freshly reconditioned Sprint box ...

Re: The cost of Motor Sport.
I think we get better value in NZ.
Club membership $50
National race licence is $121 which incidentally is the same for a joint race/rally licence that I have. Also another $34 to use a full caged vehicle on the road.
Race entry varies from $130 for one day to $160 for whole weekend.<br ...

Re: Spring Rate's
I've run 350lb fronts and 200lb variable rears since setting my racecar up about 4 years ago. The advice I got was not to go harder on the front unless only running on very smooth tracks, ie no bumps which certainly isn't the case in NZ. Rear needed to be lighter as much to try to keep both wheels ...

Toledo - circuit racing
Friend of mine has been campaining a 2 door Toledo in circuit racing in NZ. Started off with a 1500 tuned motor, then onto an 1850 (which was slightly slower) and now has a tuned TR7 motor waiting to go in. Trouble is he also has a Vitesse and has switced to that for the time being.
Re: Front Lower Wishbones
There really is no way other than to buy or borrow a ball joint separator - they aren't expensive and you'll need one everytime you need to split a ball joint on the steering / suspension. The ball joint is a taper fit in the arm and will not come out without the sort of force that can be applied by ...

I've been using the same NGK BP7EFS plugs for about 2 years (20 race meetings) with no problems whatsoever. This is the second set that have been in this engine - I only changed them when I last did some work on the head, not because they failed. Always starts well and run up to ...

Re: Timing the 'head
I doubt anything would have moved, but check that the timing marks are in line (groove on camshaft with groove in front bearing cap, the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley lines up with zero on the timing scale and that the rotor arm in the distributor points to the lead that feeds no1 (front ...

Cracked front suspension mount
Just discovered this cracking around the top weld of the front suspension mount. This has in turn cracked the top tube and is starting to pull away. I thought all you guys who are also racing or using your cars for track days ought to be aware of this possibility so you can check from time to time ...

Re: Castrol LSD oil
I've used Castrol fully synthetic SAF-XA (75W-140) in the Sprintparts (salisbury plate type) LSD in my race car with no ill effects whatsoever. That was on Castrol's technical dept recommendation.
What with reading about Scott’s leaking axle and now mine again. These things are a real problem.
I thought it was just the seal I blew at Pukekohe and hadn’t had a chance to pull it apart until this morning. I had earlier cleaned the oil from the brakes (dismantled), from the wheel, tyre ...

Thought you might like a laugh (updated)
This was at Taupo in Feb. Our series races are handicapped so this is what happens when you start 50 seconds after the slowest car and have about 20 slower competitors to overtake in 8 laps! The 'sand' trap is in fact volcanic pumice which gets everywhere. This does demonstrate that with enough ...

straight chassis??
Suggest you measure the wheelbase on both sides, between the centres of both wheels and then measure the diagonals. It doesn't matter exactly what you measure diagonally as long as it is the same both ways - actually easier than it may sound. I usually hook a steel tape around a ball joint nut on ...

Redline water wetter
Thoroughly recommend this. I have used in in the racecar for almost 2 seasons.
1. it does help the engine run slightly cooler during racing in hot weather (105 vs 110C), presumeably by improving heat transfer.
2. the inhibitors appear to work well as there is no sign of any corrosion
Re: Signal Red....
The BL Sprint parts catalogue (1975) doesn't list Signal Red, only the colours Jon mentions.
Signal Red was a popular Jaguar colour durng the '60s, if you see a red E-type or MkII, the chances are it is Signal Red. When alongside Pimento, it make the latter look very orange.
